It is appalling to learn that the C.L.R. James Library in Hackney is going to be renamed the Dalston Library and Archives. James was there when the library was named in his honour in 1985. The authorities insist that, in spite of the proposed change, they will continue to honour James. There is a petition against the name change, which I hope readers of this column will sign and help to circulate. Having C.L.R. James’s name on the library is an honour — to the library. To remove it is an act of vandalism. Please sign the http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/saveclrjameslibrary/.
Edited to add: This campaign has now been victorious – thanks to all those who signed the petition.
